School Direct

School Direct is a new route into Initial Teacher Training that places the school based programme at the heart of the experience. The main aim of School Direct is to allow schools to recruit and select the trainees they want with the expectation that they will then go on to work within the school or group of schools in which they were trained, although there is no guarantee of employment.

Information on School Direct can be found at http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/apply-for-teacher-training/apply-now

Entry to the School Direct programme is conditional on:

  • Achievement of at least a 2:2 and preferably a 2:1 honours degree (or recognised equivalent);

  • The relevance of an Honours degree content and /or A Levels to the chosen specialist subject(s);

  • Passes at GCSE in English Language, Science and Mathematics at grade C or above (or equivalent). Please note: although the Teaching Agency minimum requirement is a grade C at GCSE, we will generallybe looking for applicants with a grade B or above inEnglish Language;

  • Selection based on the information provided on the GTTR/NCTL application;

  • Selection based on a successful interview (part of the interview is conducted within a partner school);

  • A medical report which is deemed satisfactory;

  • A completed DBS enhanced disclosure which is deemed satisfactory by the University;

  • Successful completion of the Teaching Agency’s Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy (these are now a pre-entry requirement).

  • Successful completion of a minimum of 10 days teaching experience in either Key Stages 1 or 2 during the last two years in a primary school.
